If the natural look of wood is tops on your list, use cedar. The heartwood of the tree is rot resistant. Cedar doesn't readily absorb moisture— and, since moisture is what creates twisting and splitting, cedar decking tends to lie flat and straight. Most cedar decks have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years for the deck boards, but it can deteriorate faster when used for ground-level decks and for shaded decks that are slow to dry out.
If near-zero maintenance is your goal, have us install composite decking. Most is made from recycled plastic and wood chips or sawdust. It's more expensive than other decking products like cedar and pressure treated, but once it's down, it won't rot, splinter or twist. The color change from UV exposure can fade the material over the long term losing about 15% of its richness over 5 years but only if it's south or west facing. Since the material is defect free, you can use every inch. Maintenance involves spraying it off with a power washer. If you want to relax on your deck instead of maintaining it. We use the Trex Transcends product using clips instead of fasteners through the top of the boards.
Hardwood decking is one of the most beautiful of all decking materials. It is one of the best compromises between quality, durability and appearance. Hardwood decks are usually oiled once a year to preserve the rich brownish colour of the lumber, and to protect the wood from the effects of harsh weather and sun. Hardwood is usually installed with 5/4x6 deck boards, and fastened with hidden screws. Although this is the most beautiful decking, it is also the most expensive due to the extensive amounts of labour needed when dealing with this wood, and the exotic origin of the wood itself.
